White Cliffs

We left Trilby Station on Wednesday morning and continued on the Darling River Run. Having a bit of flexibility with our itinerary on our last afternoon at Trilby we had a look at our maps and decided to head north west before heading down to Menindee Lakes.

This time we were on the east side of the Darling River Run, first stop the famous Tilpa pub where every square millimetre of the walls and ceiling has a visitor's name recorded. Too early for a drink (and they don't sell coffee!) we had a look around and a chat with one of the locals. The chat was very beneficial as the road we had planned to take up to White Cliffs was closed, so slight change of plan and we headed onto Wilcannia. We are very fortunate to be travelling at the moment, the landscape is lush and green with lots of spectacular wild flowers, white, yellow, purple and red abound.

After topping up the diesel, price not too bad $2.20/litre, we were back on the dirt and heading to White Cliffs. The road was a bit chewed up from the recent rains, the trade-off for the lush, colourful landscape.

We had a great spot for the night at on one of the local stations, Glen Hope. Out came the maps again and we found a national park not too far away with some great walks. From White Cliffs we came down Whipstick Road to Mutawintji National Park (all unsealed gravel with washaways and bulldust), where we are staying for two nights. The park is approximately 130 kilometers north east of Broken Hill. Our current challenge is the wind....it is blowing a gale and forecast to continue for the remainder of today and tomorrow. Tomorrow we will do a least one of the walks starting early before the forecast 33 degrees arrives.
